We've made some great friends here in northern Indiana, and have had some great times with them already! One particular family owns a restaurant! It's a nice quite little place, and they ALL work there. Mom is a cook, and ALL the kids waitress, bus tables, run the cash register, what ever needs to be done - they do it themselves. Well, anyway I was lazily enjoying being unemployed for the summer, sitting in my chair with the computer in front of me for longer than I want to admit!! When I got a phone call from this friend! She was all in a panic and I was hoping nothing was wrong! She explained that ALL of her children (5 of them) had gone of to camp for the week and the ladies she had covering for them couldn't make it. She asked if I would be willing to come help out. Of course, still in my PJs, sitting here all relaxed never expecting to actually have to get up, I said YES, SURE, I'll Be right down!! WHAT WAS I THINKING!!!!!
I have never waitresses before, ever! I could not believe I just volunteered to do this, with no training, she assured me I had training - I've waited on my family HA!! So I jump up, get a quick shower, run down there (it's only a couple blocks from our house) and there are over a hundred people in the restaurant that only seats 80!! Some of them are sitting at still dirty tables waiting for them to be cleaned off, others have pulled up chairs for six to the corners of 2 person tables!! Many were waiting on food for toooo long! Some were waiting for their checks so they could go. Here I am NO EXPERIENCE, grabbing up an apron and getting to work! I still can not believe it!! I sat people, got water, coffee, drinks, took orders, brought food, cleaned tables, swept floors, ran the cash register, answered questions I really had no idea how to answer, and ran around like a crazy person for 8 HOURS!! Oh my.....I really don't know what I was thinking!!
I was thinking I'll run down and do some dishes for a couple hours! I'll clean a few tables, or I'll get a few drinks for people! I was not thinking that people would order drinks I had no idea how to make, that I would run a cash register and try to figure out how to bill for products that are taxed and non-taxed at the same time, I would carry four plates at once through walkways that I barely fit through, I would take those plates to the wrong table and the customers would not say a word, I would give them the wrong check - since they had the wrong food, I would hit the wrong key on the cash register more than once, I would come home 8 HOURS later completely exhausted, and when my friend called again last night, I would say - SURE I'll come in tomorrow!! What was I thinking???
So here I go, I am off again today to go way out of my comfort zone!! It's a stretch for sure, but I'm helping out a good friend and I'm gaining new experience! I couldn't help but think of that little extra cash I could be spending at the Target dollar spot either!! HA HA!!
And on top of that I got called in for another interview yesterday, fingers crossed, this one is right up the street and I loved the staff I interviewed with, hoping to hear something from them soon!!
If you read all of this post, thanks for hanging in there with me!!! I know it wasn't anything cute or free!!! I'll be back with more of that later this week!! I Hope you are all have a wonderful Wednesday!!
